How Community Access Supports Independence

Community access is about more than getting from A to B. It’s about feeling confident, connected, and in control of your own life. Through the NDIS, community access supports can help you do everyday things in a way that feels safe, respectful, and truly centered on you.

At Vivante Care, we focus on making community access practical, enjoyable, and empowering.

What is community access?

Community access is the support you receive to get out and about and take part in everyday life. This can include:

  • Going to the shops or local markets

  • Attending medical or therapy appointments

  • Joining social groups or community events

  • Visiting friends and family

  • Taking part in hobbies, sports, or classes

The goal is to help you build skills, confidence, and independence while staying connected to the people and places that matter to you.

Everyday examples of community access

Community access looks different for everyone. Some examples of how we support people include:

  • Shopping trips: Planning a list, travelling to the shops, paying at the checkout, and bringing everything home safely.

  • Appointments: Getting to and from doctors, specialists, or therapists, and helping you understand and remember important information.

  • Social activities: Going to the movies, cafes, libraries, community centers, or local events.

  • Learning new skills: Using public transport, reading timetables, or navigating new places with support.

Each activity is tailored to your goals, comfort level, and preferences.

How community access builds independence

Community access is not just about having someone with you. It’s about building your independence over time. It can help you:

  • Grow confidence – by practicing tasks in real-life settings with gentle support.

  • Develop life skills – like budgeting, planning, time management, and communication.

  • Stay active and engaged – which supports your physical and mental wellbeing.

  • Make choices – about where you go, who you see, and how you spend your time.

With the right support, you can do more for yourself and feel more in control of your day-to-day life.

Our approach to community access at Vivante Care

At Vivante Care, we take a person-centered approach to community access. That means:

  • We start with your goals – what independence and community life mean to you.

  • We plan together – choosing activities, locations, and times that feel right for you.

  • We move at your pace – building skills gradually and celebrating every step forward.

  • We focus on safety and respect – making sure you feel comfortable, heard, and supported.

Whether you want to build confidence using public transport, join a local group, or simply enjoy more time in the community, we’re here to support you.

Is community access funded by the NDIS?

Community access supports can be funded through your NDIS plan, usually under Core Supports or Capacity Building, depending on your goals and needs. If you’re unsure how it fits into your plan, we can help you understand your options and talk through what’s possible.
